School or club: choosing a football starting point

A parent’s guide to confidence, commitment and finding a route that fits your child.

Media

The best starting point is the one a child wants to return to. Before comparing training hours or age groups, consider how they feel about football and what your family can realistically support.

Start with a conversation

Ask your child what they enjoy: playing with friends, trying new skills, being part of a team or simply having a ball at their feet. Ask what feels difficult too. A child who plays confidently at home may need time to settle into a new group; an experienced player may want a different challenge. Neither needs a label about ability.

When a school setting may suit

A familiar setting can make the first step feel manageable. Think about whether your child likes joining activities with classmates and would enjoy a weekly introduction without a wider team commitment. The useful question is not whether school football is a lower level, but whether the environment helps this player participate and enjoy learning.

When regular club training may suit

A player who asks for more football may enjoy returning to a group, revisiting ideas and sharing responsibilities with teammates. Consider the whole week: school, existing sport, travel, rest and time with friends. More sessions are only useful when the commitment works for the player and family.

Three situations to think through

“They want to try, but feel nervous.” Ask how new players are welcomed, how activities are adapted and who they can speak to. A gradual introduction may matter more than the number of sessions.

“They already play and want more.” Discuss what they want to develop and how another programme would complement their current football. Look for a clear purpose rather than adding hours for their own sake.

“They love football, but our week is full.” Be honest about the commitment you can sustain. A manageable starting point leaves room for enjoyment and recovery. There is no need to rush into a team route.

Questions worth asking before committing

  • Who is the group for, and how are different starting points supported?
  • What are the full costs, weekly commitment and cancellation arrangements?
  • Who will coach the group, and how will families hear about progress?
  • What safeguarding, supervision and collection arrangements are in place?
  • How will we review whether the experience is right for our child?

How this relates to EFA

EFA’s school and club routes are still planned. School attendance is not a prerequisite for the club route, and an assessment would not guarantee a place. Dates, venues, available groups and fees must be confirmed before enrolment opens.

The programme overview contains the proposed ages and training formats. Use it alongside this guide, then tell us what your child wants from football and what fits your family. Registration and shop orders remain closed; enquiries are welcome.
