How Parents Can Support Player Development Without Taking Over

Full article · English original

Parents influence the conditions in which football learning takes place, even when they are not involved in the session itself. The most useful support is usually relational rather than technical: encouragement, perspective, consistency and trust. Harwood and Knight (2015) argue that parental involvement becomes more constructive when it is responsive to the player’s needs rather than driven by adult expectations. A useful question for every family is this: does our support help the player become more independent, or more dependent on our approval?

Start with the person rather than the performance. Ask what the player noticed, what they enjoyed and what felt difficult, instead of beginning with a judgement about the result. What would happen if the journey home became a space for curiosity rather than an immediate review of mistakes? When players are allowed time to process, they are more likely to develop their own language for describing decisions, emotions and next steps.

Parents can also shape how success is understood. If praise is reserved for selection, goals or praise from others, the player may learn that visible outcomes matter more than learning behaviours. Notice preparation, courage, concentration, communication and the willingness to try again after an error. Which behaviours would you still value if nobody else noticed them?

Practical routines provide a quieter form of developmental support. Adequate sleep, food, hydration, recovery and reliable preparation help players bring attention and energy to practice. These routines should be collaborative as the player matures, with responsibility gradually transferred rather than withdrawn suddenly. Is the family routine creating sustainable habits, or solving every problem so quickly that the player never learns to manage it?

The coaching relationship needs room to breathe. Parents should feel able to share relevant welfare information and ask respectful questions, while allowing the coach and player to own technical conversations. Conflicting instructions from the touchline or repeated post-session analysis can make a player focus on pleasing adults instead of reading the game. How might the player’s experience change if every adult used the same language about learning, effort and responsibility?

Difficult emotions deserve recognition before solutions. A player who is disappointed may first need someone to acknowledge that the experience hurt, rather than explain why it happened or compare it with somebody else’s journey. A simple response such as “That looked hard today; would you like to talk?” offers empathy and choice. What would you want from another adult if you were carrying the same disappointment?

Support also means protecting identity beyond football. Friendships, education, work, creativity, rest and other interests provide perspective when the game feels uncertain. This wider identity is not a distraction from ambition; it is a source of resilience that helps players return to football with greater emotional balance. Are we giving the player enough space to be a whole person rather than only a developing footballer?

The aim is not to remove every obstacle from a player’s pathway. It is to create a secure base from which the player can face challenge, ask for help and make increasingly informed decisions. The most powerful parental question may be, “What support would help you take the next step yourself?” When encouragement, boundaries and trust work together, the player gradually becomes the main author of their development.
